Adventure 2498

I spent June 18-27 2022 in the pacific northwest.

Discovery park

First I stayed with John Dale and his family in Seattle.

The Puget Sound

Then Aunt Missy picked me up in Seattle to hang out in Gig Harbor for a couple days.

We ate food

and did activities outside. Summer here is beautiful.

Then I went back to Seattle and got on a 33 ft. sailboat with John Dale and his great-uncle Art.

You may know, but JD and I sunk the boat last time we sailed together - check this out.

Keep going to find out how we did this time.

Seattle --> Port Townsend

This is a picture of Seattle as we motored away and headed to Port Townsend.

Art plotting a course
Nothing is more predictable than the 1:30 PM nap

The schedule for the next couple days was: wake up early, motor/sail to somewhere new, explore, eat, go to sleep.

Cargo ship heading to Seattle
Nuclear submarine
Not the boat we were on
Stinky paper mill next to the marina
Port Townsend

I made a flow diagram of John Dale's criteria for choosing a restaurant.

Sirens in Port Townsend had what we were looking for, thankfully.

Art's advice for people in their twenties is to trust your gut and to think about things with a positive mindset. He has no regrets.

Mt. Baker from the San Juan's Islands
Spencer Spit state park

On shore, after a full day of boat, it feels like the ground is swaying beneath you.

Seaweed and rocks

JD eating (all of the) snacks

Deer Harbor

The currents in the channels between islands was so strong that we'd go less than 2 knots upstream and more than 8 knots downstream.

Orcas --> Sucia

Under sail

Sucia

Today's adventure, number 2,498: Alex and JD hike all the trails on Sucia Island.

Alphabet soup on the boat
Not dead
Cliff Hanger!

Our estimate is that we walked over 12 miles!

Sandstone cliffs
Views from Sucia

We jumped in the freezing cold water after hiking all day. Didn't last long in there - it was really cold.

Rowing to shore
This was a real tie up job

On Sunday we headed back to civilization where JD's mom kindly picked us up.

Sucia --> Keystone
We did not go to Canada
Wildlife everywhere
Just off the boat - Mt. Rainier in the back

This was a great experience, I can't wait until the next one.
